GO4FUSION kicks off: A great step towards advancing nuclear fusion in Europe

18 February 2025

Setting the Stage for Fusion Energy Development

Frascati (IT), February 2025 – The GO4FUSION project has officially begun its ambitious journey to accelerate the development of fusion energy in Europe. Launched in January 2025 and funded by the European Commission through the EURATOM programme, this two-year initiative aims to lay the foundation for a future Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in fusion energy. The project, coordinated by ENEA, held its Kick-off Meeting (KoM) at ENEA’s premises in Frascati (IT), bringing together key stakeholders from across Europe’s fusion ecosystem.

This project meeting marked the first step in a collaborative effort to drive Europe’s fusion technology forward. Representatives from the European Commission and project’s ten consortium partners - ENEA, Ansaldo Nucleare, CEA, CIEMAT, Empresarios Agrupados-GHESA (EAG), Framatome, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), LGI Sustainable Innovation, Eni, and Thales - gathered to align on the project’s objectives, discuss strategic priorities, and establish a roadmap for the project’s next two years.

GO4FUSION’s mission is clear: to position nuclear fusion as a viable solution for a sustainable, decarbonized energy future. By fostering cooperation between industry and research institutions, the project seeks to overcome key technological challenges and pave the way for commercial fusion applications.

Key Objectives and Next Steps

During the KoM, participants outlined the key objectives of GO4FUSION, which include:

  • Co-designing strategic goals for the advancement of fusion technology in Europe.
  • Establishing a comprehensive research and innovation agenda that integrates industrial and scientific priorities.
  • Driving industry-led projects that leverage EU funding to demonstrate fusion’s commercial potential.

The KoM in Frascati has set the tone for the intensive work ahead. Over the next two years, GO4FUSION will drive fusion energy forward by engaging key stakeholders through the European Fusion Stakeholder Platform (EFSP), consolidating a Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA), and forming an industry-led association. A Public-Private Partnership will be launched to foster collaboration and investment, while identifying trade associations and exploring collaborative frameworks to ensure coordinated progress toward market-ready fusion technology. These interconnected efforts will collectively support the successful advancement of fusion energy.

The project partners are committed to ensuring that Europe remains at the forefront of fusion energy development. With strong support from the European Commission and an engaged network of stakeholders, GO4FUSION is set to make significant strides in the fusion sector.
